Renovate Harriman Hall Program Verification Phase
SUNY Stony Brook
Project description
DM Engineers provides plumbing and fire protection support for the Renovate/Replace Harriman Hall for Business project at Stony Brook University during the Program Verification (PV) phase. Our work includes a high-level assessment of existing conditions within Harriman Hall and a feasibility analysis for two potential new construction sites, Circle Road SE and South Campus. This effort involves reviewing existing plumbing and fire protection systems, assessing water supply, sanitary, and stormwater utilities, and evaluating fire protection infrastructure such as sprinkler coverage, standpipes, and hydrant capacity. We also conduct a code compliance review to identify potential requirements under NYS Building Code, NFPA standards, and SUNY-specific directives, including ADA-related plumbing upgrades. A comparative analysis is developed to weigh renovation challenges—such as reuse or replacement of risers, mains, and stacks, and potential retrofit of sprinkler or fire pump systems—against the requirements of new construction design. Our preliminary narrative summarizes existing conditions, major concerns, utility service requirements, and code implications, and is incorporated into the cost estimator’s analysis. These efforts provide critical input for site selection, cost planning, and program alignment, ensuring plumbing and fire protection considerations are integrated with long-term operational and compliance goals.
