CU Butler Library
Columbia University
Project description
DM Engineers was engaged by Columbia University in 2021 to manage the replacement of the existing fog humidification system located in the sub-basement mechanical room, which served the Butler Library book stacks and office areas. The existing system was old, past its useful life, and caused maintenance issues and low-humidity conditions throughout the building and stack levels. As part of the scope, the controls at the five (5) AHUs were also updated.
The major work for this project included the full demolition of the existing humidification system, which involved the removal of air compressors, distribution piping, control panels, dispersion tubes in the five AHUs, electrical power wiring, conduits, and associated components. Following the demolition, DM Engineers oversaw the installation of a new steam-to-steam generation and humidification system. This installation included the steam generator, a water softener, associated piping, insulation, updated dispersion tubes in the five AHUs, system controls, and electrical power wiring and conduits.
In addition, new humidity sensors were installed on both the East and West stacks on each level to ensure accurate control and improved environmental conditions within the library.
